In a video titled "The Fiverr Situation Gets Worse...", the YouTube channel **Logically Answered** walks through how **Fiverr** went from a pandemic boom to a shrinking marketplace, why AI is eating the cheap freelance jobs the platform was built on, and what the company is betting on next. The video runs about 14 minutes.

This is our own summary of a third-party video analysis, not original reporting. All figures below are as stated in the video, which lists its sources in the description. Check Fiverr's own filings before relying on any number.

## The short version

- **The pandemic was an anomaly.** Remote work pushed Fiverr's growth and stock to highs in 2020 and 2021, then growth slowed once offices reopened (1:00 to 3:02).
- **AI hit the small jobs first.** After ChatGPT launched in November 2022, tasks like images, articles and simple sites could be done in minutes (3:02 to 4:00).
- **Fewer buyers, bigger spenders.** Active buyers fell, but the remaining buyers spent more, which hid the damage for a while (5:01).
- **Forecasts were cut twice in 2026.** Fiverr blamed AI-driven compression in high-volume, low-value work (7:01).
- **The bet: go upmarket.** Larger, more complex projects and business clients, with a platform clean-up that upset some established sellers (8:02 to 10:05).
- **The open question.** Management says the change will take at least six quarters to show up (11:05 to 13:02).

## What the video covers

### Pandemic boom (0:48 to 3:02)

During lockdowns, as the video tells it, businesses needed freelancers and Fiverr's active buyers reached 3.4 million in 2020, up 45%, with full-year revenue up 77% to $189.5 million. In 2021 revenue grew another 57% and buyers reached 4.2 million. The company aired its first Super Bowl ad on February 7, 2021, and its stock rose from about $20 to $323, a valuation above $11 billion. Underneath, net loss grew from $14.8 million to $65 million as operating costs outpaced gross profit. Once offices reopened, revenue growth fell to 13% in 2022 and 7.1% in 2023.

### The AI takeover (3:02 to 8:02)

The video says the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022 meant smaller tasks could be done in minutes, and Fiverr's stock fell to $29.14 by the end of 2022. Fiverr responded by embracing AI: AI service categories in 2023, then Fiverr Go in early 2025, which lets freelancers train AI models on their own work to interact with clients. In September 2025 it cut about 250 jobs, around 30% of its workforce, to become "AI first."

### The numbers behind the decline (5:01 to 7:01)

According to the video, active buyers fell from 4.08 million in 2023 to 3.1 million in 2025 (about 24%), yet marketplace revenue only slipped from $307 million to $297.5 million because annual spend per buyer rose from $278 to $342. The services business (ads, Seller Plus and similar) grew from $88.4 million in 2024 to $133.4 million in 2025. In the second quarter of 2026, marketplace revenue fell 15.5% to $63.1 million, active buyers dropped 21.9% to 2.7 million, and spend per buyer reached $368. Total revenue fell from $108.6 million to $97.8 million.

### Forecasts cut twice (7:01 to 8:02)

The video says Fiverr began 2026 expecting $380 million to $420 million in revenue, lowered it to $375 million to $390 million after the first quarter, then to $356 million to $372 million after the second. Its shareholder letter pointed to ongoing compression in high-volume, low-value transactional work as AI adoption accelerated, with writing and translation transactions down more than 24%.

### The upmarket gamble (8:02 to 11:05)

Fiverr decided to stop competing for small tasks and move toward higher-value work. The video says it overhauled its search algorithm in a "quality recalibration" aimed at promoting new sellers and removing fake accounts, which hurt some long-established sellers whose rankings dropped. New metrics such as success score and communication quality confused many freelancers. Early signs, per the video: in the first quarter of 2026, clients completing projects worth at least $1,000 grew 18% year over year and made up 15% of project value, and services revenue was $38.4 million, up 30%, while marketplace revenue fell 13.6%.

### Will it be fast enough? (11:05 to 13:02)

In the second quarter, services revenue was $34.6 million and growth slowed to 2%, while marketplace revenue fell another 15.5%. The video points out the branding challenge: a marketing VP with a $50,000 project is unlikely to think of the place people go for quick background removal. Management said the financial impact of the transformation would take at least six quarters, and an analyst asks how Fiverr can be confident there won't be more "watershed moments" for AI in that time. The video concludes the strategy is a gamble because Fiverr risks moving away from the market that built it.

## What it means for your business

1. **Don't sell what AI does for free.** Low-priced, high-volume tasks are the first to be compressed.
2. **Watch your best customers.** Higher spend per remaining customer can hide a shrinking base.
3. **If you move upmarket, bring your sellers along.** Changes to ranking and metrics can alienate the people who built your marketplace.
4. **Plan for a long transition.** Even with a clear strategy, the payoff may be years away.
5. **If you are a freelancer,** emphasize what AI struggles with: strategy, relationships, complex projects and accountability.
